Midland Evangelical Free Church

Location: Midland, Michigan.
Program: New 2,500-seat auditorium for Worship and concerts.
Budget: $3,500,000.00.
Schedule: Design completed 2004.  Construction completed 2005.

Working with design/builder, Three Rivers Construction, Inc. and audio systems design firm Taipale Media Systems, Inc., Acoustical Design Collaborative, Ltd provided room acoustics, sound isolation, and HVAC noise control design for a new 2,500-seat auditorium used for Worship and contemporary Christian concerts. Extensive acoustical treatment was necessary for the auditorium to provide low room reverberance for music and sufficient ceiling sound reflections for congregational singing and response. Sound absorptive and diffusing surfaces were specified for the walls and sound reflecting ceiling clouds were installed below the roof trusses. The rear wall has several low frequency “bass” traps to reduce the build-up of low frequency sound energy. Sound isolation was necessary to reduce sound transmission between the auditorium and adjacent meeting and Worship spaces. HVAC noise control addressed air handler, duct “breakout”, and diffuser noise generation and transmission. The rooftop chiller was relocated to grade level to avoid costly sound isolation for the lightweight building structure. Praise for the acoustics has been expressed by clergy, congregants, and touring artists.
