Episcopal Church of the Ascension

Location: Clearwater, Florida.
Program: Nave renovations for a new pipe organ and sound systems.
Budget: $175,000.00.
Schedule: Design completed 2002.  Construction completed 2003.

Working with Episcopal Church of the Ascension, Acoustical Design Collaborative, Ltd provided acoustical measurements, room acoustics, noise control, and sound systems design for nave renovations prior to installing a 56 rank gallery pipe organ and a 7 rank chancel pipe organ, both by Orgues Létourneau. The modifications included making the chancel organ chamber walls less sound absorptive by adding additional layers of gypsum wallboard and removing chancel area carpet to lengthen room reverberance. The gallery was rearranged for better choral ensemble conditions to incorporate a more intimate seating layout, closer proximity to the organ console, hardwood floor with seating risers, and an acoustically open balcony front. Noise from HVAC equipment fans and diffusers were reduced for a quieter Worship environment. The new sound system provides a split-cluster system for the nave and distributed loudspeakers for the narthex, chapel, and memorial garden all controlled from the gallery sound mixing position. The new organs and sanctuary acoustic renovations compliment musical expression for Worship, choral concerts, and organ recitals.
