Acoustical Design Collaborative, Ltd provided room acoustics, sound isolation, and HVAC noise control design for renovating an existing 250-seat recital hall. The space serves as a performance venue for faculty, student, and visiting artists. The design challenges were to eliminate sound focusing from the barrel-vaulted ceiling and to provide reverberance suitable for chamber music. Thin acoustical plaster on the center ceiling and an aisle carpet eliminated sound focusing. These materials, and new fabric upholstered seats and velour drapes, provide sufficient sound absorption to meet the target reverberation goal. New HVAC equipment installed in the attic required architectural and mechanical equipment noise control. Backstage improvements include new dressing and green rooms. Wimberly Recital Hall is now a restored jewel on this largely Georgian-style campus.
