Garfield Whaley Auditorium

Location: Alexandria, Virginia.
Program: Design of a new 800-seat auditorium and music rehearsal rooms.
Budget: $6,500,000.00.
Schedule: Design completed 1997.  Construction completed 1998.

Acoustical Design Collaborative, Ltd provided room acoustics, sound isolation, HVAC noise control, and sound systems design for a new performing arts center at an existing parochial high school. The auditorium was designed primarily for performance of symphonic and chamber music and features acoustical design concepts not normally found in high school auditoria. The acoustical design emphasizes side wall reflected sound created by a reverse fan shape at the back, resulting in a high degree of perceived acoustical “spaciousness”. A demountable stage shell can be configured for different sized music ensembles or stored in the flyloft for drama productions. Audio systems were designed for voice sound reinforcement, assistive listening, recording, and production intercom/paging. A large music practice room for instrumental and choral rehearsals, small music practice rooms, scene shop, green room, and dressing rooms are located backstage. Many Washington, DC area professional groups use the auditorium as a performance and recording venue, providing the School with an added revenue source.
