Acoustical Design Collaborative, Ltd
provided room acoustics, HVAC noise control,
and sound system design for a 375-seat
balcony addition to an existing 600-seat
performing arts auditorium. The original
underbalcony design was shown to result in
compromised acoustical conditions due to an
insufficient height-to-depth ratio. A
revised balcony scheme was developed with the
objectives to avoid acoustical shadowing,
direct sound to the audience, improve
clarity, and increase underbalcony sound
levels. Profiling the balcony front reduced
strong sound reflections back to the stage
and eliminated sound focusing. Existing HVAC
ducts were routed to the attic to “drop” air
at a lower velocity onto the audience to
reduce ambient noise levels. Signal aligned
underbalcony distributed loudspeakers
augment the central cluster loudspeaker
system. Future acoustical and sound system
enhancements were outlined in a design
master plan. The Todd Performing Arts Center
now provides varied programming for Eastern
Shore residents, helping to bridge town and
gown. |
