Hall of Musical Instruments

Location: Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC.
Program: Renovation and modernization of a music recital hall.
Budget: $950,000.00.
Schedule: Design completed 2001.  Construction completed 2002.

Acoustical Design Collaborative, Ltd provided room acoustics, HVAC noise control, sound isolation, and sound system design for the renovation of a 250-seat recital hall in the Smithsonian Institution Museum of American History. A sound focusing concave ceiling was replaced with a flat coffered ceiling having elements of varying dimension to enhance sound diffusion. The ceiling coffers enclose HVAC ducts and oversized diffusers to achieve an NC-20 noise level necessary for location recording. The stage was redesigned with an angled ceiling and improved side wall sound reflecting surfaces. The ceiling coffers enclose HVAC ducts and oversized diffusers to achieve an NC-20 noise level necessary for location recording. The rear exterior window was modified with a ¾ inch thick glass lite spaced 2 feet from the existing curtain wall to reduce aircraft noise transmission. Interior sound isolation to the adjoining exhibition galleries was achieved through custom acoustical doors. The sound system uses ceiling distributed loudspeakers for lectures and portable loudspeakers for prerecorded audio playback. Microphone inputs are routed back to a recording control room. The Hall of Musical Instruments is now a performance showcase for the Smithsonian’s collection of Stradivarius, Guarneri, and Amati stringed instruments played by the renowned Smithsonian Chamber Players and world-class guest soloists.
