Acoustical Design Collaborative, Ltd served
as consultant to the United States Marine
Band “President’s Own” for a new music
rehearsal and recording facility. The
project tasks were to determine acoustical
performance criteria, develop conceptual
acoustical design, and provide on-site
construction review. Other consultants
completed the final design as part of a
government design/build contract. Exterior
vehicular traffic and aircraft noise
required box-within-box sound isolation
construction for the walls and roof along
with
acoustical entrance vestibules. “Floating”
interior sound isolation construction was
used for the adjacent music rehearsal rooms
to satisfy requirements for simultaneous
practice sessions. Sound recording in the
rehearsal rooms necessitated extremely low
HVAC system noise levels. Room acoustics
were designed to provide variable
reverberation, sound diffusion, enhanced
musician ensemble conditions, and clarity
for recording. Special attention was paid to
the ceilings, which feature panels of
varying height and materials to enhance
sound absorption, diffusion, and specular
reflections. The recording studio control
room was based on the “live end-dead end”
acoustic design concept. The Marine Band
Music Rehearsal Facility is a
state-of-the-art building that John Phillip
Sousa, the Band’s founder, would be proud
of. |
