Acoustical Design Collaborative, Ltd provided room acoustics, sound isolation, and HVAC noise control design for a large music rehearsal room and eight small practice rooms. The large rehearsal room was designed for performing groups ranging from marching band to small chamber music ensembles. Heavy velour draperies vary the reverberation time between 0.6 to 2.0 seconds while wall and ceiling shaping provides a highly diffuse acoustic to promote musician ensemble conditions. The ceiling panels are at varying heights and comprise sound absorbing, diffusive, and specular reflecting materials. The quiet building site reduced costly exterior sound isolation, however the exposed interior ceiling was designed to limit rain noise transmission. Interior sound isolation included double CMU partitions and independently isolated floor slabs and footings. HVAC noise was controlled by prudent placement of the air-handler units and custom elbow sound attenuators. The small practice rooms were designed for individual practice, small instrumental groups, and percussion ensembles. Half of the practice rooms have electronic reverberation enhancement systems to vary the room acoustic response. The Frank Arts Center provides a needed addition to this liberal arts college and meets National Association Schools of Music (NASM) standards.
