Enoch Pratt Free Library

Location: Baltimore, Maryland.
Program: Renovation and expansion of main public library.
Budget: $32,000,000.00.
Schedule: Design completed 2002.  Construction completed 2007.

Acoustical Design Collaborative, Ltd provided room acoustics, sound isolation, and HVAC noise control design for the renovation and expansion of Baltimore’s main public library. The project involved three phases to renovate the main library building, add a new annex, and expand the Children’s Garden reading room. Reverberation control was necessary for the central atrium and the new high-ceiling reading rooms containing the African American, Edgar Allen Poe, H.L. Mencken, and State of Maryland collections. Room acoustic modifications used materials simulating the existing historical finishes. Sound isolation was necessary for the computer kiosks, interactive media stations, and partitioned rooms. Special sound isolation was required for noisy spaces such as the book sorting and mechanical equipment rooms. HVAC system noise control was provided for the general reading, group study, and community meeting rooms. The Enoch Pratt Library restoration and expansion provides a cultural, educational, and visual anchor to Baltimore’s historic Mt. Vernon Arts District that would make its namesake benefactor proud.
