Torgersen Hall

Location: VPI & State University, Blacksburg, Virginia.
Program: New advanced communications technology and laboratory building.
Budget: $21,000,000.00.
Schedule: Design completed 1998.  Construction completed 2001.

Acoustical Design Collaborative, Ltd provided room acoustics, HVAC noise control, and sound isolation design for a new 160,000 ft2 high technology educational building. The program included classrooms, multi-media laboratories, virtual effects laboratory, 150-seat lecture hall, 300-seat auditorium, reading room, three story atrium, Board of Visitor’s room, and faculty offices. Room acoustic design for the lecture hall, auditorium, and Board of Visitor’s room used a palette of acoustical materials having a “high-tech” appearance. Sound isolation was necessary for the educational spaces and faculty offices facing the atrium. Specially designed duct liner with an anti-microbial and erosion-resistant facing was used for the HVAC systems. Of architectural note is the reading room serves as a link between Torgersen Hall and the existing Newman Library spanning the Mall and framing the entrance to the Drill Field, a campus focal point.
