Acoustical Design Collaborative, Ltd
provided sound isolation and HVAC noise
control design for two dormitory buildings
at St. John’s College. The main acoustical
objective was to create a quiet environment
for students whose curriculum encompasses
reading 350 of the “classic” books.
Acoustical plaster and acoustical tile
ceilings reduced sound levels in the
dormitory rooms, corridors, and student
study lounges. Sound isolation addressed
both indoor and outdoor noise sources.
Indoor noise sources include basement level
HVAC equipment and shower/toilet rooms on
each floor. Noise from mechanical equipment
and plumbing was isolated using CMU
partitions. A lightweight concrete floor
with a carpet and backing pad reduced
footfall noise from the corridors to the
spaces below. Isolated stud partitions in
dormitory rooms were designed to attenuate
low frequency noise common with stereo and
electronic equipment. Windows with suitable
acoustic performance controlled noise
transmission from exterior chillers. Gilliam
Hall received an award from the Baltimore
Chapter of the AIA for design excellence. |
