Acoustical Design Collaborative, Ltd provided room acoustics and sound system design for a new 850-seat high school auditorium to serve a variety of school and local community programs. Of concern was to improve the strength and timing of side wall early sound reflections necessary for acoustical “spaciousness” and clarity. A series of trapezoidal sound reflecting panels were designed to decrease the time difference between direct sound from the stage and side wall reflected sound. Sound diffusive and absorptive panels reduce the strength of long-delayed reflections from the concave rear wall to avoid sound focusing. A shaped ceiling provides sound diffusion, increases the strength of early sound reflections, and provides useful specular reflections to increase unamplified sound levels. Ceiling-distributed loudspeakers in delay zones and a stage localizer loudspeaker amplify speech programs. The new Blake High School Auditorium provides an acoustical environment that meets a variety of program needs while conforming to local school district design guidelines.
