Erie County Courthouse Courtroom "H"

Location: Erie, Pennsylvania.
Program: Courtroom renovations for historic preservation and to improve speech intelligibility.
Budget: $475,000.00.
Schedule: Design completed 1997.  Construction completed 1998.

Acoustical Design Collaborative, Ltd provided room acoustics, HVAC noise control, and sound systems design for the renovation of an historic 1852 courtroom. The project objectives were to restore the courtroom to its original appearance and to correct speech intelligibility problems. Acoustical measurements indicated a combination of room reverberance, high HVAC noise levels, and insufficient amplified sound distribution all reduced speech intelligibility. New finish materials, including fiberglass hidden above the overhanging window cornices, acoustical plaster on the perimeter coves, heavy velour drapes, and period carpeting were installed to lower room reverberation. Acoustical duct lining, sound attenuators, and resized diffusers reduced HVAC system noise. A new voice reinforcement system with automated electronics to simplify user control and recessed ceiling loudspeakers provide uniform sound distribution. The project received a State of Pennsylvania historic preservation award upon completion.
