Acoustical Design Collaborative, Ltd
provided room acoustics, sound isolation,
and HVAC noise control design for an
environmental advocacy group’s headquarters
building. The building and its systems were
designed for minimum energy consumption and
extensively used recycled materials,
resulting in a LEED™ Platinum certification.
The open-plan nature of the building created
a challenge for speech privacy that was
resolved by using shredded wood fiber
acoustical wall and ceiling panels.
Partitioned offices and conference rooms
were constructed from acoustically rated GWB
stud walls. The HVAC system uses ground-source
geothermal heat pumps along with
forced-air ventilation. The use of
fiberglass for HVAC noise control was
prohibited, so “packless” sound attenuators
were specified for the air ventilation
system. The Phillip Merrill Environmental
Center is a case study demonstrating that an
attractive and functional building can be
designed having minimal impact on the
surrounding environment while preserving
precious natural resources. |
