Acoustical Design Collaborative, Ltd provided room acoustics, sound isolation, HVAC noise control, and sound systems design for the renovation of a 1930’s athletic building to be used for intramural sports and extra-curricular activities. The architects exposed the building's original interior wood roof decking and skylight which were covered by acoustical materials as part of an earlier renovation.  Calculations indicated the original ceiling materials with their low sound absorption would result in a 4 s room reverberation time. To reduce reverberance and maintain durability, acoustical CMU and cement acoustical plaster were specified for the walls and a perforated metal acoustical ceiling was specified above the bleachers. Sound isolating double CMU walls and a floating floor were necessary for the mechanical equipment room adjacent to the gymnasium. HVAC system noise control included sound attenuators and double-wall acoustical duct. Diffusers and grilles were enlarged to reduce noise generation. The exterior chiller required an acoustical screen wall to meet the local noise ordinance. The sound system comprises a series of large format constant directivity horns augmented by ported woofers. Ritchie Coliseum provides much needed space for athletics and physical education classes while reusing a prominent campus building.
